Aurora Borealis Activity Uk

Spectacular Skies As Northern Lights Fill The Sky Over The UK

What Is Happening?

A rare display of the aurora borealis was visible in parts of the UK last night, from the Scottish Highlands to Cornwall.

The Met Office issued an alert on Wednesday night, warning that the aurora could be seen across much of the UK. The display was described as "spectacular", with people sharing images of the pink and green lights on social media.

The aurora is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's atmosphere. These particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, which is why the aurora is most commonly seen in high-latitude regions.

The aurora is usually only visible in the UK during periods of high solar activity. However, last night's display was particularly strong, and it was visible even in southern parts of the country.

The Met Office said that the aurora could be seen again tonight, but it is likely to be less intense than last night's display.
